Due to logistical and financial reasons we’re regrouping, but stay in touch, we are planning something fun for December 5 and 6. We shall rise from the ashes possibly with grant money, fresh enthusiasm and beautiful volunteers.

(Many apologies this was intended to be uploaded sooner.)

Stay in touch, we’re getting back on the boil!

Dear LiveTown Supporters,

About now, for the last 3 months, you could have received our flyer/read our blog;
this time it’s a message to tell you that LiveTown Club, and its organisers are taking
a break to reconsider, re-imagine and re-construct… a better format, where private funds
are not so heavily required,…. and grants are sought; where the show is styled to what
performers and patrons want…etc….etc…
If you want to help in this process please contact us- you can email
mreya@livetownclub.com

We are trying to organise two LiveTown shows for Friday 5th December and Saturday 6th December,
both evening shows at the Mt Barker Town Hall;
your assistance would be greatly appreciated in many areas.

Thankyou for all your valued encouragement, attendance, wonderful performances and
volunteered help for our shows so far.

They’ve been a pleasure and joy to organise, though quite a financial outlay.
We are working on a more sustainable structure.
Stay in touch.

Yours in the love of  great Music, positive Ideas and Community,

Mreya
for the LiveTown Team

Greetings LiveTownies!

Hope you are keeping warm. Today I have for you fabulous photos and a summary of the August LiveTown event of last Friday evening. We had 6 acts as follows:

The first two were singers, of folk and jazz (we love you both, but we don’t have a photo from the night):
Kate West (sweet of tone and sweet of nature) folk singer and guitar player. Surely not old enough to be the mother of part of another of our young acts. (See Juronimo, below)
Aimee Crathern, a new talent to LiveTown and destined to be a crowd favourite, with powerful jazz vocals and backed with karaoke, sang with both spirit and maturity. Come back and sing another time, Aimee!

Garida. This multi-instrumental group of four friends played lively folk tunes including jigs and hornpipes, utilising Irish bouzouki, mandolin, flute, recorder, violin, guitar and the “swoonful” (overheard comment) voice of Matthew Lykos.

Saffron. To the accompaniment of the hypnotic and fascinating hurdy-gurdy and drums, swirled the lithe, colourfully-dressed women of Saffron. The first of our acts to grace our blog-roll, check out Saffron’s My Space profile! A skilled small dancer also entertained us.

Sierian, a delightful singer-keyboard player with mostly original songs, had a memorable, haunting vocal style and good (borrowed) keyboard mastery. (That was the keyboard that was borrowed, not the mastery).

The big and intricate sound of Jeronimo (Mischa and (Kate’s son) Ishan) prompted an anonymous prediction that “Red Sky” will be their first single on Triple J.

Juronimo

One of our previous event performers mentioned the amazing quality of our sound system and sound technologists. “Just like you’re playing, only louder, you don’t even know it’s there”. Thanks Kiffen and Roley and RKG Speaker Systems.

Thank-you to our beautiful volunteers, including gentle lady of the soup, rolls, coffee and mulled wine: Jenny (the kitchen was a-buzz between acts) and generous photographer: Peter.

We owe thanks for the whole concept including this particular evening to the neverending enthusiasm, organising skills and musical knowledge of Mreya. Good work once again!

I don’t know about you but my world feels richer with real live music in it. Let us know your experience in the comments section below. The more voices the merrier!

Thanks to all who helped with the event last Friday night, including our tireless sound guys, and a special hello to our new volunteers! Another very successful evening of live music combined with a friendly enthusiastic audience.

The night had a lively start provided by Selkies, a Sonya Mellor-led celtic/gypsy string trio, with toe-tapping tunes, and heartfelt compositions.

Following was Dan Burt in his role as “Dapper Dan” who kept up the energy, and raised quite a few laughs with his wonderful music hall style set. It’s amazing what rhymes with Got ‘em and Spot ‘em. All his music is available on CDs, see “Artists” page for more information.

Ladybird Johnson, comprising Jen Watkins and Es McDonald, drew us in with their beautiful harmonies and original award-winning songs along with their great quirky cover of 80s inXS.

Leigh Marshall and Quentin Ayers topped off the evening with a variety of songs & kept us Staying Young. (Nice cameo from our fearless leader, Mreya, also. Great voice, keep it up).

We had a lovely night, meeting some new friends and reconnecting with established ones. We all enjoyed the (leek and potato or minestrone) soup, great fresh rolls from Brezel bakery, mulled wine (for the over 18s), the warm surrounds of the Mt Barker Institute and most of all the friendly atmosphere.

As soon as we have all the acts for August 8 confirmed we will let you know!!

Hello dear LiveTown fans!

We would like to announce another inclusion to our fabulous line-up for tomorrow night: Selkies a three-piece (on this occasion) celtic, gypsy strings group, led by Sonya Mellor (of Djilia fame). You may remember Djilia, the 8-piece girl-band from the last event. This promises to be a toe-tapping addition to the evening.

When you are getting ready, expect Mt Barker (The Hills, at night, in winter!) to be very cold, but inside LiveTown (the Mount Barker Institute) will be warmed with lively music, hot soup (and rolls), spicy chai, mulled wine and friendly happy (possibly dancing) people (oh yes, and we’ve made sure the heaters are working this time!!). Can’t wait to see you there!

PS It’s easy to subscribe to this blog to be kept up to date with LiveTown developments, use the RSS feed button (top right).

PS2 If you like the LiveTown event graphics, you may like to see my art cards; I’ll bring them to show you tomorrow night. I am selling them for $5 for 1, or $25 for 6.

One of our fabulous performers this month (for the July 11 LiveTown event at Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills) is Dan Burt. Let us tell you a bit about him:

‘Dapper Dan’ is Dan Burt in his concert guise! Dan sings and plays accordion with a selection of great songs from his English West Country and Music Hall repertoire.

A professional Entertainer of some 27 years, Dan is probably best known for his work as Dr. Burt’s ‘One-Man-Band’ or with ‘Dobbin the Wonder Horse’, or maybe as a relief teacher in Hills Primary Schools, but has always been a passionate and practicing musician with roots in English Folk music. He plays accordions and piano, and sings pretty good too! His current repertoire spans Baroque, Classical, Jazz, Folk and Comedy, the latter culminating in two CD albums of 100 year old English Music Hall songs - ‘A Little Bit Of Cucumber’ and ‘The Hole In The Elephant’s Bottom’. These songs still speak across the years to small children up to senior citizens and are in constant demand where ever Dan performs or teaches.

Hi there LiveTown-ers!

We have a great show for you in July.

You will notice the change in the cover charge, and the fact that the warming winter consumables are now included. We will have a slightly shorter, showcase-style show, with a folky flavour this month, and jamming for the die-hards (musicians and fans!) later on. Please know that we always welcome constructive feedback.

The first LiveTown Club event was a cracker. With approximately 90 people in the audience, soup and crusty rolls, and mulled wine it was set to be a warming evening on a cool winter’s night. The evening was opened by Ros Cameron with a welcome to country. The first musicians were Dave Clarke, Kathy Townsend and Phil who shared some folk-inspired songs about Nepal and South Australia.

Djilia, an eight person all-female strings collective based in Mt Barker, brought alive the sounds of Russian gypsies.Djilia

Local performer Kate West, recipient of the Frances Folk Gathering Open Vocal Award 2008, was supported by multi-talented Mt Barker musician, Stephen Stone on mandolin and Matty Salter on superb upright bass.

Kate and Djilia

They played Scottish and Australian folk songs, featuring Kate’s strong sweet vocals and audience sing-along.

Triptych, a three voice a-capella group, sung about climate change in wonderful harmonies.

Headline act Andrew Clermont, multi- instrumentalist extraordinaire, and Montz Matsumoto on 5-string banjo drew rapturous applause from a totally captivated audience. “The brilliant repartee between Andrew and Montz both musically and verbally was outstanding; they are born entertainers..exquisite musicians” reported Rosemary Toogood and this was echoed by other audience members. The audience was captivated by the humour and musicianship of the pair and the many stories within the rich bluegrass textures.

The emphasis of LiveTown Club is Music, Ideas, Community and aims to be a regular gathering of musicians in a fun atmosphere. The events are organised by a collective of volunteers with a passion to bring together creative performers and audience in a lively forum. Acts will range from acoustic solo artists, to stringed instrumental groups and spoken word. We will feature special guests and there will be opportunities for musicians to jam, and for you to dance to escape the winter chill.

The series of LiveTown events will be held monthly, on the second Friday of each month. In July we will be hosting Hills group Ladybird Johnson and wonderful acapella trio Triptych plus more.
If this sounds like your scene, and you would like to perform your music, please contact us.

The next LiveTown is Friday 11 July, 7.30-11pm.
The Institute, Gawler St, Mt Barker.
Cost: $12, $8 concession, performers and children under 12 free.
